At that time, the department included the histopathological, bacteriological, and clinical diagnostic sectors. It was headed by the distinguished pathologist Konstantin Fyodorovych Yelenyevsky (1926-1943). Under his leadership, scientific work was carried out, aimed at solving key problems not only in orthopaedics and traumatology but also in the morphology of support structures. Yelenyevsky’s fundamental developments are related to the pathology of metabolism, the study of bone tumours, and bone-joint tuberculosis. From 1943 to 1955, the laboratory was led by Dr. Sci. (Biology) Yevhen Fyodorovych Lysytskyi, a recognized expert in embryonic development, as well as in the regeneration and vascularization of bone and cartilage tissue both in normal conditions and under various pathological processes. For a long time, the laboratory was headed by Prof. Dr. Sci. (Medical) Yevhen Yakovych Pankov (1968-1989). He continued the study of osteoreparation and made a significant contribution to the diagnosis of musculoskeletal tumours. For a short period (1974-1977), the laboratory was led by Nina Mykolayivna Sak. Her research focused on the mechanisms of intervertebral disc degeneration. From 1989 to 2017, the laboratory was headed by Dr. Sci. (Biology) Prof. Ninel Vasylivna Diedukh, a leading expert in the field of musculoskeletal system morphology. Among her main scientific achievements are the development of a new direction for determining the mechanisms of bone remodelling disorders in osteoporosis, its pathogenesis, and the development of osteoporotic fractures, experimental-morphological justification of approaches to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, research into bone and cartilage regeneration under the influence of exogenous and endogenous factors, and the use of biomaterials for bone defect replacement, including in the case of osteoporosis. From 2017 to 2024, the laboratory was headed by PhD Natalia Oleksandrivna Ashukina, whose scientific activity was focused on the study of bone tissue regeneration after the influence of various factors, as well as after the implantation of new biomaterials. In collaboration with Prof. Z.Z. Zyman (Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin) and Prof. N.V. Diedukh, she conducted a series of studies on the use of new synthesized types of calcium-phosphate ceramics for osteoplasty in rat experiments, identifying promising samples for clinical use. For 10 years, together with Prof. O.K. Popsuishapka, she researched the causes of non-union in comminuted diaphyseal fractures and methods of their treatment, particularly the role of fibrin clots in bone regeneration for such patients and their practical application in surgical activities. Under her leadership, research was conducted in the field of optimizing bone tissue regeneration using growth factors at various stages of regeneration in combination with mesenchymal cells to improve the repair of critical-size bone defects.

Main Research Areas

Studies of structural and ultrastructural characteristics of skeletal and muscular tissues, namely:

investigation of reparative osteogenesis under conditions of endocrine imbalance, exposure to harmful exogenous factors, and the use of medicinal products;

histological examination of bone tissue regeneration in the context of implantation of new synthetic materials (corundum and bioactive ceramics, metals with various coatings, carbon, etc.) and biological materials (cultivated skeletogenic cells, allo- and autografts);

research into the peculiarities of regeneration of traumatised and degeneratively altered intervertebral discs and articular cartilage;

investigation of the mechanisms of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis development, and approaches to correcting such disorders;

structural features of muscle tissue in degenerative spinal conditions and the state of muscles under impaired bone regeneration.

Pathoanatomical verification of skeletal and muscular system diseases.

Osteoporosis.
