The research and development of these approaches were carried out simultaneously by M. Khvysiuk; however, M. Khvysiuk’s main work is spinal surgery.

Spinal surgery in general, and surgical treatment of degenerative spine diseases, is based on surgical approaches, bone plastic surgery, and the use of implants, including fixators, anaesthesiological support, and biomechanical feasibility.

A significant contribution to the development of spinal surgery and the implementation of surgical methods for treating spinal diseases and injuries was a cycle of scientific studies on various surgical approaches to the vertebral bodies. The initiator and pioneer of this was O. Korzh. Under his initiative, research in this direction was conducted by R.R. Talishynskyi, but the main work on developing new approaches belongs to M. Khvysiuk. His candidate dissertation laid the foundation for the famous monograph by O. Korzh, R. Talishynskyi, and M. Khvysiuk “Operative Access to the Bodies of Thoracic and Lumbar Vertebrae” (1968), which has been a standard guide for vertebral surgeons for over 50 years.

Under M.I. Khvysiuk’s leadership, studies were conducted to improve surgical access to the cervical vertebral bodies, which formed the basis for the candidate dissertation of V.M. Kozytskyi.

The second cornerstone of modern vertebral surgery was research on materials for spinal fusion: bone allografts and autografts, and biocompatible materials (corundum, hydroxyapatite, and tricalcium phosphate ceramics).

The issue of bone plastic surgery occupied a significant part of the institute’s work. It is worth recalling that M.I. Sytenko’s doctoral dissertation (1924) was dedicated to bone autoplasty. Later (1935, 1940), he repeatedly returned to the problems of bone plastic surgery.
Incidentally, it should be noted that the institute possesses one of the largest collections of materials worldwide on the use of allotransplants.

Another important basis for spinal surgery was the improvement of anaesthesiological support for the operation and intensive therapy in the immediate postoperative period after extremely complex operations on the spine at that time.

M. Khvysiuk’s publications reflect the advanced experience of anaesthesiological support for spine surgeries, which at that time lasted 5-6, even 8 hours.

A further study was the proposal of O.O. Korzh to use biologically inert materials—monolithic and porous corundum ceramics—for restoring interbody support and primary stable spinal fusion. A team of authors, headed by Academician O. Korzh (M. Khvysiuk, G. Hruntyvskyi, E. Makovoz, I. Tymchenko, A. Holukhova), developed a series of ceramic implants, which, when installed, were filled with bone “shavings” or “gravel.”

Restoration of interbody support and stabilization of the vertebrae using implants in the cervical region was first developed and applied in clinical practice by M.O. Korzh. His student, O. Pulbere, continued research in this direction.

By reviewing the history of the department’s scientific works, several general trends in their development can be identified:

Minimization and reduction of the destabilizing effect of decompressive surgical interventions;

Increased reliability and minimization of trauma during spinal fusion;

Striving to avoid spinal fusion and limit the improvement of the load-bearing capacity of the spinal motion segment while maintaining mobility.

At the department, candidate and doctoral dissertations by renowned orthopaedic-traumatologists were defended:

G.Kh.
