On December 19, 2024, at the premises of the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, a scientific and practical conference with international participation in a mixed format (offline and online) took place. The event, titled “Treatment of Combat Trauma and Its Consequences,” was dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the renowned orthopedic traumatologist, Professor Karl Fedorovich Wegner. The organizers of the conference were the Kharkiv Regional Branch of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Ukrainian Association of Orthopedic Traumatologists” and the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The conference began with a traditional “Traumatologist’s Day” on the third Thursday of the month, opened by the Head of the Branch, Prof. Volodymyr Filipenko. Greetings were delivered by the Director of the Institute, MD Stanislav Bondarenko<\/a>, and the President of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Ukrainian Association of Orthopedic Traumatologists,” Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Prof. Serhii Strakhun.<\/p>\n

Stanislav spoke about the exhibition in the library dedicated to Professor Karl Wegner, the first Director of the Institute. He also presented the “For Assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine” medal from Ukraine’s Minister of Defense R. Umerov to Prof. Volodymyr Filipenko for his significant contributions to providing high-quality medical care to servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and saving lives during the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Prof. Serhii wished the conference participants fruitful and creative work, inspiration, and success in discussing combat trauma treatment issues.<\/p>\n

In his address, the Honored Scientist and Technician of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, President of the Kharkiv Medical Society, Prof. Mykola Korzh, highlighted the biographical, scientific, and medical milestones of the life and work of the outstanding orthopedic traumatologist, Prof. Karl Wegner, who left an indelible mark on the development of orthopedics and traumatology.<\/p>\n

Next, the Head of the Branch, Prof. Volodymyr Filipenko, awarded the “Honorary Member Diploma” of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Ukrainian Association of Orthopedic Traumatologists” to Ph.D. Frida Leontieva<\/a>, Head of the Laboratory Diagnostics and Immunology Department of the Institute, who has been a member of the Kharkiv Regional Branch for 50 years.<\/p>\n

The conference consisted of two sessions and a break, with about 90 participants present in the hall and 50 online attendees.<\/p>\n

During the first session, speakers included the Director of the Institute, MD Stanislav Bondarenko<\/a>; Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology No. 2 of the National University of Health of Ukraine named after P.L. Shupyk, MD, Prof. Mykola Ankin (Kyiv); Head of the Joint Pathology Department, Prof. Volodymyr Filipenko; Head of the Trauma Department of the Central Regional Military Clinical Hospital, Lieutenant Colonel of Medical Service, Ph.D., Associate Prof. Yurii Lazarenko (Vinnytsia); Injury Clinic Physician of the Northern Regional Military Clinical Hospital, Mykhailo Hnyria (Kharkiv); Head of the Department of Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System, Ph.D. Kostiantyn Romanenko. Topics included the treatment of combat trauma consequences to the pelvis, acetabulum, upper and lower extremities, compartment and tourniquet syndromes, non-union fractures, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n

In the second session, speakers included Dr. Olha Pidhayska from the Charit\u00e9 University Hospital (Berlin, Germany); Orthopedic Traumatologist Vasyl Makhovskyi (Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital); Head of the Pediatric Traumatology Department Serhii Dovhan (Regional Clinical Trauma Hospital, Kharkiv); Emergency Traumatology Department Physician Valerii Lytvyshko (Chuhuiv Central District Hospital named after M.I. Kononenko); Upper Limb Reconstructive and Restorative Surgery Physician, Senior Researcher, MD Oleksandr Strakhun (State Institution “Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine,” Kyiv); Emergency Traumatology Department Physician, Ph.D., Associate Prof. Ruslan Buznytskyi; and Emergency Traumatology Physician, Ph.D. Dmytro Mianovskyi.<\/p>\n

The discussions covered systemic and local antibiotic therapy for combat trauma treatment, pediatric injury management during military operations, adult elbow joint treatment, the use of external fixation devices in front-line hospitals, corrective arthrodesis in foot treatment, and skin grafting for blast injuries. The conference concluded with discussions led by Prof. O.K. Popsuishapka, Prof. V.H. Ryndenko, and Prof. V.A. Filipenko.<\/p>\n
