To the 75th anniversary of the birth of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Tankut

March 23 this year marked the 75th anniversary of one of the leading orthopedists-traumatologists of Ukraine, a talented scientist-surgeon, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Tankut.

Volodymyr Oleksiyovych’s way of life is a way of unceasing service to medical science and sick people.

In 1976, V.O. Tankut graduated from the Kharkiv Medical Institute and in August of the same year was admitted to the Kharkiv Research Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology. prof. E. Sitenka for the position of traumatologist. He made his first steps in orthopedics and traumatology under the guidance of prominent scientists, Academician OO Korzha, professors MI Khvisyuk and MI Kulisha. In March 1979 he was transferred to the position of junior researcher in the Department of Joint Pathology. Since then, the main topic of his research has been the problems of pathology of the hip joint and endoprosthetics. He worked fruitfully on the treatment of patients with diseases and injuries of the hip joints, developed methods of reconstructive surgery and tools for their implementation. In 1980, for the development of a new design of hip arthroplasty and a set of tools for arthroplasty, Vladimir Alekseevich was awarded a diploma of III degree and a bronze medal of the ENEA of the USSR.

According to the results of his research in February 1981, V.O. Tankut successfully defended his dissertation on “Total arthroplasty in the treatment of patients with pathology of the hip joint.” This was the first scientific study in Ukraine on this issue, which became the basis for further research in the same direction.

In 1980, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych was appointed executive executor and coordinator of scientific research in the Republican Comprehensive Program for Combating Road Injury, headed by Academician Oleksiy Oleksandrovych Korzh. In November 1981, V.O. Tankuta was appointed senior researcher of the established group on road injuries. The research was conducted during 1980-1985. It involved specialized institutes of Ukraine and 22 departments of orthopedics and traumatology. Volodymyr Oleksiyovych actively worked on the topic and became a recognized expert in providing assistance to victims of road accidents. The results of these studies have reduced the number of road accidents and reduced mortality and disability due to accidents. A joint order was issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior. This work was marked by the Diploma of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

At the same time VO Tankut continued to study the problems of pathology of the hip joint. In 1985 he was awarded the title of senior researcher, and in 1986 Vladimir Alekseevich was re-elected to the position of senior researcher at the Department of Joint Pathology.

In February 1993, V.O. Tankut defended his doctoral dissertation on “Pathogenetic rationale for surgery for coxarthrosis, prevention and treatment of complications”, which developed a clear system of reconstructive surgery for various forms of pathology of the hip joint. This made it possible to significantly improve the results of treatment of this group of patients. The proposed new methods of surgical operations have been widely implemented in medical practice. In March 1993, VO Tankuta was elected a leading researcher, and in January 1996 – the chief researcher of the Department of Orthopedic Arthrology and Endoprosthesis. In September 2015, V.O. Tankut received the title of professor.

For many years at the institute Volodymyr Oleksiyovych has been actively curating Sumy, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Zaporizhia oblasts, where he introduces modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal pathology. For his fruitful work in this direction he was awarded the title of “Honorary Curator of Odessa and Sumy regions.”

Professor V.O. Tankut also actively cooperates with international societies of orthopedic traumatologists. He is one of the founders of the German-Ukrainian Society of Orthopedic Traumatologists. This gave many young specialists from Ukraine the opportunity to do internships in leading clinics in Europe. For his active work in this society, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych was awarded the “Gratitude” of this society.

V.O. Tankut is an active participant in many international and national scientific and practical conferences and symposiums, where in his reports he covered new technologies for the treatment of orthopedic and trauma patients.

Since March 2018, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych has been heading the scientific and organizational department. Under his leadership, the department conducts research on disability due to injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, rehabilitation of patients and the disabled with fractures of long limb bones.

For many years he was a member of the specialized scientific council of the Institute. prof. E. Sitenka also pays considerable attention to the education of young scientists. He was in the objective reviewer of many candidate and doctoral dissertations, under his guidance 4 candidates of medical sciences in the specialty “Orthopedics and Traumatology” were educated.

It should be noted the scientific activity of prof. V.O. Tankuta, he was the author of projects and research leaders who received international grants, namely: the use of sapphire implants in hip pathology (the results of this study were awarded the President’s Prize for Young Scientists) and the project “Erasmus + Bioart” – an international training program development of artificial implants for engineering specialties. The results of this study were reflected in a foreign monograph co-authored by the jubilee.
