At the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology, on 18–19 February, three osseointegration prosthetic surgeries were performed on veterans for the first time.

At the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, an important step has been taken in advancing modern prosthetics and rehabilitation for veterans.

On 18–19 February, the Institute’s specialists performed three osteointegration prosthetic surgeries on veterans for the first time. The procedures were carried out with the participation of Henk Van de Meent (Netherlands) and a multidisciplinary team of the Institute, which will continue to support the patients throughout their rehabilitation.

Currently, the veterans are in good condition. Within 4–5 weeks, the implant is expected to integrate with the bone, after which external prostheses will be fitted, allowing full weight-bearing and the start of active recovery.

This marks the first experience of osteointegration prosthetics in Ukraine implemented within a state medical institution, opening new opportunities to improve the quality of life for people after amputations.

As part of the event, a round table was also held at the Institute with the participation of representatives of veteran and civil society organisations, veterans, government authorities, researchers, and the medical community. The discussion focused on the prospects for further development of this method in Ukraine and the need for state support to ensure accessibility of osteointegration prosthetics.

We thank our international partners, the Institute’s team, and all participants for their joint efforts in restoring the lives of our defenders and advancing Ukrainian medicine.
