On 23–24 October 2026, the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and Stepan Gzhytskyi National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies of Lviv held an international scientific and practical conference in Lviv entitled “Restoring the Function of a Lost Limb: From Modern Prosthetics to Osseointegrative Prosthetics, Bionics and Rehabilitation”.

The event brought together leading Ukrainian and international experts in orthopaedics, reconstructive surgery, osseointegrative limb exoprosthetics and rehabilitation.

Particular attention was paid to modern osseointegration technologies, the surgical aspects of treatment, functional recovery and improving the quality of life of patients following amputation.

Importantly, staff of the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine presented their own results in surgical treatment, osseointegrative limb exoprosthetics and comprehensive rehabilitation of patients following amputation, demonstrating a high level of scientific and clinical expertise. The accumulated clinical experience highlights the promise of this technique and its considerable potential for restoring patients’ functional abilities.

The participation of internationally renowned experts Rickard Brånemark (Sweden), Henk van de Meent (the Netherlands) and Max Ortiz Catalán (Australia) was an important part of the conference, providing an opportunity to exchange professional experience and discuss prospects for the development of osseointegrative exoprosthetics.

I am convinced that osseointegrative limb exoprosthetics is one of the most promising fields in modern reconstructive orthopaedics. Our clinical experience demonstrates the successful application of this technology and the need for its wider adoption in clinical practice in Ukraine, in accordance with current standards for safety, patient selection and rehabilitation.

Our primary goal is not only to restore the lost function of a limb, but also to help people regain their independence, mobility and quality of life.
