Ukrainian Experts on the Global Stage: Participation in the 3rd International Consensus Meeting on Periprosthetic Joint Infection

Ukrainian Experts on the Global Stage: Participation in the 3rd International Consensus Meeting on Periprosthetic Joint Infection

On 8–10 May 2025, a world-class event took place in Istanbul — the 3rd International Consensus Meeting on Periprosthetic Joint Infection (#ICM2025), which brought together over 1,200 leading experts in orthopaedics and infectious diseases from more than 100 countries.

The Ukrainian delegation was represented by:
Stanislav Bondarenko, Volodymyr Filipenko, Oleksii Marushchak
(Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology, National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine)
— Hennadii Kolov
(Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine)

The delegation joined the process of developing a new global strategy for managing one of the most complex challenges in modern orthopaedics — periprosthetic joint infection.

Over the course of six months, the experts worked using the Delphi method: they reviewed the entire body of available research, formulated answers to more than 300 clinical questions, engaged in discussions, voted, and debated. Some decisions were difficult, while others emerged through consensus and mutual understanding.

We express our gratitude to Javad Parvizi, Thorsten Gehrke, and the hundreds of colleagues who have dedicated years to building this unique process of collaboration and consensus.

All the questions in the preparation of which our delegation was involved were approved by an overwhelming majority (over 90% of votes).

We hope to translate this consensus into Ukrainian in the near future and make it available for use by orthopaedic trauma surgeons in Ukraine.

Important:

Given the scale of joint replacement surgeries in Ukraine, it is imperative that we do not remain on the sidelines. Every clinic performing joint replacement must be prepared not only for implantation but also for managing potential complications — in accordance with the best global protocols. This is precisely why the integration of Ukrainian professionals into the international landscape of knowledge and practice is essential.
