The Institute’s Department of Paediatric Spine and Joint Pathology and the Paediatric orthopaedics department were founded in 1930
for inpatient treatment of children with congenital and acquired disabling pathology of the musculoskeletal system
(spine, joints, limbs) of various etiologies.

The department works in three main scientific areas: spine pathology, pathology of large joints, deformation and
shortening of the limbs. Another important area – skeletal tumors – is studied with the participation of specialists from the
Oncology Department of the Institute.

The department conducts research in the diagnosis and treatment of various orthopedic spine pathologies in children and youth.
age (scoliotic and kyphotic deformities of various etiologies, dysplastic spondylolisthesis, inflammatory
diseases), dysplasia and congenital dislocation of the hip joint. The department was the first in the country to use
metal structures for surgical correction of scoliosis and rod devices for correction of limb deformities,
developed effective methods of treatment of juvenile epiphysiolysis of the femoral head, original methods of bone grafting
etc. For the first time in the country, endoprosthetics in children with
bone tumors. Also, for the first time in the country, the study of osteoporosis in children has begun.
